Welcome to the Yalakom Ranch

Information

The Yalakom Ranch is the last private property in the Yalakom valley; this spectacular area is well known for its Big Horn Sheep, Mountain Goat and Mule Deer. The word “Yalakom” is the Native word for the Ewe of the Big Horn Sheep and there are still a couple of herds roaming the high country. As well, there are plenty of resident Mule Deer along with an abundance of mixed wildlife throughout the valley.

The nearby town of Lillooet is located on the cusp of the majestic coastal mountains and the arid interior dry lands. The ranch's 2400-ft. elevation sets it apart from lower, hotter and dryer locations in the region.

Winters are generally mild, with anywhere from 4 inches to 1-1/2 feet of snow. The road to Lillooet, as well as the road to the famed Whistler area are well maintained throughout all seasons.

 History

The Yalakom Ranch itself has a 100-year pioneering history of guiding and packing into BC’s high country. The land was first homesteaded by a family in 1907 and has been used as a home and base camp for hunting and guiding ever since. Some artifacts of a bygone era still remain on the ranch.

The Yalakom valley has a unique legacy which begins with being used as a neutral hunting territory - an agreed upon no-warfare zone - shared between the Statimc, Shuswap and Chilcotin native peoples of this region. No permanent dwellings were allowed but many remnants of hunting camps can still be found throughout the valley today.

Also, there is a large serpentine belt in the Yalakom valley with many interesting surprises such as jade, jasper, yalakomite and other minerals ....a rock hound's paradise!

There is an Agriculture Lease of 183 acres for the exclusive use of the ranch itself.

Tree stands are mostly Fir and Pine, of which there are roughly 80 acres, plenty for any building projects.

There are 50 acres in alfalfa  producing 120 tons of hay, with a full irrigation system.

The land is soil tested and is a fertile land suitable for mixed agriculture pursuits. There are Apricot and Apple trees and there is great potential to ripen into an “organic” orchard: this land has never known pesticides or chemical dressings.

The ranch has exclusive water rights on Ore creek, pictured here in the summer.

This year round creek cuts through the north end of the ranch and joins the Yalakom River at the North-Westerly corner of the ranch. The water is brought into the ranch from Ore creek by a gravity fed system.

There is an 8 inch steel pipe line buried 6ft.deep that carries the water continuously throughout the winter. This line feeds the irrigation system for the fields, and a hydroelectric generator plant that supplies power to various out buildings and the main house; it also sustains the 1.2  acre pond.

Sauna and deck with a small swimming dock.

The entire westerly face of the ranch fronts on the Yalakom river, a spawning river for West Coast Salmon.

The Ranch today is a working cattle ranch with a 50 head cow-calf operation and two bulls.
There are approximately 50 sq.miles of government range land for both horses and cattle adjacent to the ranch.

There is a working corral system; bunkhouse, a tack shop, a work shop and sauna at the pond and a 1350 sq. ft. house. Also, there is a 200 sq. ft. artisan shop behind the primary home.

For those interested in a unique lifestyle choice, which offers ranching, agriculture farming or a quiet retreat and/or many other adventuresome opportunities this may be the right place for you.
